What this site is
Lawn Mapper measures a lawn from an address: it finds the property line in public county records, shows aerial photos of the lot, traces the grass with a trained detector, and lets you correct the outline by hand. It is free, with no ads, no analytics scripts and no ad trackers. One person runs it.
What it keeps
- The address you type is sent to a geocoder and to the county's own parcel server to find the lot. A map you save keeps its address so you can find it again. When no property line can be found for an address, the address goes on a list used to decide which counties to add next.
- Your location, only when you tap the crosshair, and only to find the lot. It is not stored on its own.
- Saved maps live on this site's server. Signed out, you keep one map, tied to a cookie in your browser; a visitor not seen for 90 days is deleted with that map. With a free account you keep every map on every device.
- Your email address, if you sign in. Sign-in is a link sent by email; there is no password. The address is kept lowercased, used only to sign you in and to reach you about your own maps, and never sold or passed to anyone.
- Finished maps help train the detector. When you finish a map, its outline and the aerial view of the lot are kept as training material, with the map frame. Not your address, not your email, not your account: the outline and the picture, and nothing that names you.
- If you do paid tracing work on the queue, the payout handle you give is kept to pay you.
Cookies
Two, both set by this site and readable by no script: a sign-in cookie (90 days, renewed as you use it, shared across the nilesandstuff.com tools so one sign-in covers all of them) and, signed out, a guest cookie that holds your one map. A few per-browser preferences, such as which map layers you ticked, stay in your browser's own storage and never leave it.
Who else sees what
- Cloudflare hosts the site and, like any host, sees requests and the addresses they come from in its logs.
- Mapbox, Google, Esri and USDA NAIP serve the aerial photos: your browser asks them for the pictures of the area you are looking at.
- County and state GIS servers answer the parcel lookups with public records.
- USGS and USDA provide the public lidar and near-infrared data the detector reads.
- Modal runs the trained detector. It receives the aerial photo of the lot and its frame and property line, not your address or email.
- Resend sends the sign-in email.
Deleting things
Forget any map from your dashboard; everything every tool kept about it goes with it. To delete an account, or to have a finished map's outline removed from the training material, write to the address below and say which map or which email.

Measurements come from aerial imagery and public records; treat them as a close estimate, not a survey. US addresses only.
